woah, you’re here!
A warm welcome to everyone I’ve guilted into clicking a link and subscribing to my brand spankin’ new email newsletter and personal blog! A warmer welcome to everyone else who is here of their own volition1.
I’m a writer2 and I really like sharing my writing with others3! So, what better place to do that than a free platform that encourages further interaction from my thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dedicated readers4?
I can’t promise a regular schedule of posts. I can’t promise that I won’t get tired of doing this in a month or two! But I can promise that I won’t spam you (i.e., posting more than once a day).
Really, this is just a public diary. Or a spot to put all my sappy thoughts and attempts at prose. Or just a way to provide updates to anyone who gives half a shit about what I’m up to! It could be fun. It could be embarrassing! All I know is that it’s certainly going to be…interesting.
I guess I haven’t actually done what I initially sought out to do with this post: introduce myself!
the story so far (skipping the early stuff)
I’m Eris (they/them)5! For a little while after I started college in 2017, I thought I was going to be a chemist. Then I thought I was going to be an accountant. Then, very rapidly, I had the stunning realization that those things were incredibly boring6!
In 2018, I joined a sketch comedy club and—once I was surrounded by funny people and artists and writers—realized that I had already been a writer for most of my life (despite my own brain’s best attempts to sway me from that label). I used to make up elaborate backstories for random strangers with my mom and imagine insane action dramas for the Legos in my room. Now, I mostly just vent about my emotions and write stories that “establish plot” and “move people.”
But I digress. From there, around 2019 I started doing improv comedy. Also very fun! I was so used to agonizing for days over a story, getting every minute detail perfect until the thing was ruined as a whole anyway, but in improv I got to stand around with funny people and make it all up on the spot! Things were going great.
And then it was 2020, so, uh, yeah.
But college proceeded normally(ish) into 2021. And suddenly, I got very sick! And it was permanent, and entirely unrelated to the general unpleasantness occurring simultaneously! So, all at once, college stopped proceeding. And I was in bed for over a year, learning how to live with my kind of normal, occasionally malfunctioning cadaver. And I did. But I didn’t really thrive. I just kind of survived.
The writing got pretty sad around that time. And I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Hell, I didn’t know what I was capable of doing.
But I got off my ass, took an antacid that didn’t work, took an anti-nausea pill that didn’t work, took a Tylenol that worked a little bit, and moved back to school in 2022 to finish the year that was stolen from me.
It was awesome. I returned to all the comedy groups I was part of before, took a screenwriting class, got a job, and felt normal again (mostly). And in 2023 (that’s now!7), I graduated!
Right now, fresh out of college, I’m working as a video editor for my school. I like it well enough, but as any writer with a “real job” will tell you, it really just pays the bills. For leisure, I try to read and write as much as I have the energy and inspiration to. One day soon, I’ll write a novel! Or two! Or more! Hopefully many more.
But for now, I’m just here. And so are you! Which, I must reiterate, is very rad.
get to the point already!
So, that’s me! I hope you enjoy your time here :) Subscribe if you want to read more rambly nonsense! I’m very excited to share my art and thoughts with you <3
